    Part I: An idea is born and survives and thrives despite the lack of mementos

    In the attic of Rosser Thrash’s Summerville home sits a small box—about the size of the ones that mail–order fruitcakes are shipped in.

    It is filled with programs, press clippings, and some financial records from the early years of the Sertoma Football Classic in Charleston that is marking its 40th anniversary this month (Aug. 19 and 20). Thrash kept the mementos as a reminder of his central role in that event’s founding.

    Richland Sertoma Club's Sportsarama 2009 kicked off the start of the high school football season for eight area schools. Teams from Swansea, C.A. Johnson, Lower Richland, Eau Claire, Dreher, A.C. Flora, Keenan, and Columbia took to the field on a slightly rainy night at Benedict College's Charlie Johnson Stadium Saturday, August 15. Each match- up consisted of two 10- minute halves. Kick- offs and punts were not allowed to be returned, and there was no rush allowed on field goals, point after attempts, or punts. Read more
